Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
Why remove your wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth removal may be required when your wisdom teeth come in at an awkward angle, or overcrowd your mouth and begin to push on your other teeth. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed; but if you feel pain or discomfort as a suspected result of your wisdom teeth coming through, please contact us to make an appointment with our Stanthorpe or Warwick dentists.
About your wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that erupt behind our existing molars in our late teens or early twenties. For some people their wisdom teeth do not cause difficulties as there is room for them to erupt and come into the mouth. Many people do have difficulties because there is insufficient room for the wisdom teeth to fully erupt. This causes “impaction” of the teeth leading to a variety of symptoms, including pain around the wisdom tooth or pain in the molars from the wisdom teeth pushing against them. A wisdom tooth may also partially erupt through the gum before impacting on the last molar. This often results in chronic gum irritations, gum infections and bad breath as the area around the partly erupted tooth becomes difficult to keep clean.
What's included in a wisdom tooth removal consultation?
Evaluation of the teeth in question is primarily done through the use of a panoramic x-ray or orthopantomogram (OPG), which is taken from outside the mouth and takes an image of all the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. This can also allow for the assessment of wisdom teeth long before they become problematic. Granite Belt Dental has OPG X-ray machines at all of our clinics to give our dentists and patients the immediate diagnostic information and allows prompt assessment of wisdom teeth without the need for travel and additional appointments.
